Modernization is a complex process and attempts at modernization result in a myriad of successes and failures depending upon a nations individual circumstances. This thesis aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of the unique features of modernization under the People’s Republic of China (PRC), or as it is known the “China model”. This study utilizes a comparative historical analysis to analyze the correlations and commonalities between the Meiji Restoration (1868-1912) and the ongoing modernization efforts within the PRC from 1978 to the present. In doing so, it seeks to identify the key characteristics and themes that best define the China Model. The findings of this study indicates that while both case studies have successfully utilized the East Asian Development to modernize their economies, the PRC differs in terms of westernization, government reform, and demographics. Shedding light on the unique factors help us to better understand what makes up the China Model and contributes to a greater understanding on the history of modernization in Asia.
