With the development of advanced technology, the method of display space information transferred from paper maps to computer screen. Based on the visual cognitive load theory, a Chinese famous story-'Three Kingdoms' Romance Story' was selected as the narrative to make an animated map and displayed in the face book. All the graphic representations in the animated map were followed the map design principles and cognitive theory of multimedia learning. Some design rules were found by analyzing questionnaires. In the narrative facet, most audience paid attention to single theme. In the symbol design facet, the thematic and motive symbols were designed as pictorial styles while the symbols of background as geometric and static. This phenomenon was accelerated the figure-ground organization. Also appropriate amount symbols avoided cognitive overload in operation. To provide the audience a sense of progression and rhythm, 24fps was the appropriate pace. Nevertheless, the three panels of display, pause, and stop also played a major role in providing basic interactive functions and could not be neglected. Comparing with traditional paper map, animated map's design was not only focused on hierarchical organization and visual contrast, but also focus on technique designs such as speed and interaction control. However, well organized conceptual and technical methods will facilitate the working memory in order to promote visual communication effects.
