The Ciaccona by J.S. Bach is one of the most famous pieces for solo violin filled with passionate emotion as well as Bach’s unique outlook on life. This piece is both the longest and the largest in scope in the unaccompanied violin repertoire. In analyzing the structure of the piece, the author has divided the composition into three major sections according to the key changes occurring, based on thesis that the essence of the parallel key transfers between minor and major may indicate dark and light, perhaps symbolizing the mourning and acceptance of his late wife’s death. The author analyzes its structure by following these three sections: the opening D minor, the D major middle section, and the D minor conclusion.
The author used an Italian-style Baroque bow to practice the music in order to stay closer to the features of Baroque music in performance. The Italian-style Baroque bow is shorter than the modern violin bow, and is relatively lighter due to its materials, while it also features a differently shaped stick and hair tension. The greatest difference between the two lies in the way the curve in the stick is made in modern bows, and such structural differences influence every aspect of the resulting musical performance, ranging from the pressure applied to the string, type of bowing, as well as bowing speed and control.
This thesis will explore how instrumental performance influences the ways of expression in musical aesthetics in terms of the abovementioned features, by analyzing wrist and bow movement, as well as the connection between the bow pressure and sound articulation, with their related techniques and interpretations of phrasing.
