419 college students stated how proud or ashamed they would be of 96 behaviors. The ratings by each sex were then factor analyzed. The resulting factors suggested an organization of values that distinguishes between competence and moral values, between personal and interpersonal. It was revealed that personal accomplishment is the primary factor, academic failure the second factor for males and females. It was also revealed that a larger number of morality-related factors for females, suggesting that morality is more differentiated for females. In addition, females rated ”ashamed” behaviors more severely than males. The cross-cultural comparison of the factor structure for American and Chinese college students was discussed. Finally, the improvement and directions for future research were suggested.
