| 摘要: | 地圖符號的形成與發展，是人們對地理事物和現象認識與體驗的結果。高品質的地區符號是充實地圖內容，增進讀圖效果和繪製地圖的先決條件。不同類型的地圖有其不同的符號系統，而地圖符號系統又與地區的主題、內容、比例尺及其用途密切相關。
欲全面而又深刻地認識地圖符號和更好地開發其資訊傳輸功能，僅從實用技術觀點去研究是不夠的，爲了能夠通盤暸解這門學問，必須從思想、文化、哲學和美學的層面來分析地圖符號的性質、特點、功能及其運行規律，始克事半功倍。
本文旨在闡述地圖符號在人的表達、認知、思維、文化和美學方面的多重功能，探討地圖符號既是客觀對象的人工指稱物，又是製圖工作者思想表達的工具；同時論述它和其他學科的符號相比，旣有其共通性，又有其差異性；此外，還對如何妥善地開發地圖符號的資訊傳輸功能，以及發揮地圖的美學效用，提出我個人的一點見解，藉此拋磚引玉，希望大家一起來研究地圖符號的問題。
Map symbols are the result of how people comprehend and experience geoqraphical phenomena around them. High quality symbols can not only enrich a map content, but make map compilation easier and more accessible to its users. Different maps entail different symbol systems, and different map symbol systems are in turn closely connected with map themess, content and functions.
To understand map symbols and to better develop their communication infromation function, we can not limit ourselves to their practical function, but also explore their cu1tural, philosophical and aesthetic aspects.
