Hip-hop dance is one of the four elements of the 'hip-hop culture'. The culture began in the South Bronx in New York City during 1970s, owing much to the development in media and mass communication. Consequently, hip-hop dance, demonstrating body cultures and leisure activities, quickly spread all over the world and had an impact on contemporary dance styles. This study is to explore the development of Taipei's hip-hop dance, location distribution of learning and performance, as well as student residences in the City, through case analyses. We found that the development of hip-hop dance in Taipei can be traced to the 1980s, and 1990s has reached to a growing and boom stage since 2000s up to the present. Hip-hop dance in Taipei can be classified by the types of action and by time phases. Teaching, learning and performances of hip-hop dance in Taipei have mainly concentrated in three districts; Daan, Jhongzheng and Shilin. Through the learning effort of the young dancers, it is now spreading to other places of the Taipei metropolitan area, and even to the whole island of Taiwan.
