Thailand has become a very popular destination for tourists from all over the world. The number of tourist arrivals is continuously increasing year by year. One of the interesting reasons to visit Thailand, especially from westerners’ eyes is its image as a focus of sex tourism. Being a world top sex destination for tourists brings both advantages and disadvantages to the country at the same time. The main objective of this study is to compare the perceptions of Thai and foreign respondents toward Thailand’s sex tourism image. Total 300 respondents included 153 Thais and 147 foreigners. They were asked their perceptions and opinions toward Thailand’s sex tourism image by self-administered questionnaire. The empirical results show that there are significant differences between Thai and foreigners in perceptions toward Thailand’s overall image and sex tourism image. Contrary to the lack of inhibitions often attributed to Thai society by foreign tourists, questionnaire responses by Thais themselves indicate a much more conservative stance, with great skepticism about the wisdom of luring tourists with sex-related amusements. All the observed differences will be discussed in some depth in the body of the paper.
