Land use distribution pattern may be significantly influenced by many natural and man-made factors. This study uses geographic information system technique and excluding the absolute man-made factors to assess the impact of elevation, distance to stream, and distance to road on land use distribution at the Yangmingshan area. Results indicate that about 30 per cent of the entire study area may be suitable for economic planning and development. Residential and agricultural land use tends to decline with elevation increase, whereas forest land use, on the other hand, increases with higher elevation. Distance from the closest stream is well related to the distribution of farmland use. Among the three land use types, the influence of roads is most significant on the residential land use. More than 80 per cent of the residential homes are located within 200 m from the major transportation roads.
