In-line gauging application of liquid filling process was implemented in this work. Cans and bottles filled with liquid exist in various household products. Liquid level of the bottle is one of the important quality attributes for the inspection. Moreover, exceeding liquid level in pressure bottle can cause explosion and danger to people. The task of this study was to implement vision-gauging methods to automatically inspect the liquid levels in the filling process. The inspection technique used edge detection to identify significant boundaries in the image. The result of an edge detection operation was a set of points describing the locations of the bottle cap and liquid level edges identified in the image. The bottle cap and the liquid level in pixel coordinate were recorded by the edge detection scheme. The distance between the edges of bottle cap and liquid level was calculated and recorded in an external file for statistical quality control. National Instruments LabVIEW and IMAQ Vision software were utilized as development tools in realization of the work. Moreover, because of the diverse tools within LabVIEW, other types of I/O such as motion control, instrument control, and data acquisition were easily integrated into the application.
